A proper face for an old instrument
There is a lovely balance to the UVRAL Type E. The broad dark panel, two circular controls and original nameplate give it an unmistakable face. The glass and handpiece sit around that centre, with the textured case framing the arrangement.
I am drawn to those small design decisions: the proportion of a knob, the spacing of the lettering and the way the lid holds its glass. They make the apparatus feel considered. My notes place the model in British interwar electrotherapy, approximately the 1930s; the appeal of this individual set is just as much in the details you can see and handle.
The restoration work
My restoration notes record internal wiring inspected, corrected and re-insulated, the transformer cleaned and balanced, and the original Bakelite knobs polished. The case was cleaned and preserved, retaining its finish and character, and a modern insulated power cable with UK plug was fitted.
The condition is Used – good. Both controls are described as functional, and every electrode was tested for violet plasma. It is a pleasing combination of a purposeful black faceplate and the more delicate glass gathered around it.
Two controls and the accompanying glass
The left dial is the voltage selector, with input ranges recorded as 0–125 V / 200–250 V. The right dial adjusts output intensity and is marked Increase. I like how directly those two controls express the layout of the apparatus.
The UVRAL Type E generator, original glass selection shown in the gallery, restored insulated power lead and original textured carry case accompany this example. Enquire here for a closer look at the set, the glass and the restoration work. There is a great deal of character to discover beneath a fairly restrained lid.
Condition: Used – good.
