Wood, glass and paper

This Arthur J. Pye has the lovely, tangible presence of a wooden-cabinet instrument. The fitted catches and long lid hinge frame an arrangement of apparatus, handpiece, electrode board and papers. It is a pleasure to look through a set like this. The case gives it weight and atmosphere, while the glass brings a finer, more delicate character.

The name on the apparatus

The plaque reads Supplied by Arthur J. Pye, a small detail that I particularly like. Lettering like that becomes part of an old machine's face. Beside it, the controls and fittings invite a closer look at how the whole apparatus was put together. The dark handpiece sits beneath the electrode board, giving the case a wonderfully considered arrangement.

The papers beside it

The photographs show papers with the set, including a packing note and a hair-and-scalp booklet. I love that relationship between a machine and the written material kept with it: the object shows the ingenuity, while the papers give a glimpse of the language and ideas surrounding it.

Its next keeper

This restored example is graded Used – good. The wooden case, fitted catches, glass and papers make a characterful presentation, with plenty for a collector to appreciate at close quarters. Enquire about this Pye and we can take a slower look together at the apparatus and the pictured pieces accompanying it.

Condition: Used – good.
