A little theatre in blue velvet
Open the case and the Master gives you that lovely meeting of hard engineering and soft presentation: dark fittings, polished connectors and deep-blue velvet holding the glass. The case feels like part of the instrument's personality. It invites you to linger over the shapes, the finish and the care that went into giving every piece its place.
The spark-gap viewing window is a particularly captivating detail. A small glimpse into the electrical heart adds another layer of fascination to a machine already rich in atmosphere. The blue lining, the handpiece and the original fittings give all that engineering a wonderfully human scale.
The character of the mechanism
Original Bakelite housing and fittings sit beside polished nickel electrode connectors. The original transformer plate is rated 220–240 V, and the set has a modern insulated power lead with a UK plug. I particularly like the combination of honest period materials and clearly arranged connections: the design has a presence that a modern moulded wand rarely approaches.
My restoration notes
My notes describe cleaning and electrical servicing, including internal resistance, insulation and leakage checks. The wand and coil were tuned for a clear violet discharge. The original design and main fittings have been retained, with the replacement power cable fitted as part of the work. The Master is graded Used – good, with its blue velvet and original fittings giving it a beautifully preserved appearance.
Together in the original case
The set includes the Master apparatus, matching pictured glass electrodes, original wand and connection leads, UK-plug power cable and original velvet-lined case. The presentation has a real intimacy: all those separate materials and shapes gathered around a small machine with an extraordinary idea at its centre. It is easy to see why someone cared about its appearance as much as its mechanism. That feeling is what I hope its next keeper discovers.
Condition: Used – good.
