Wood, glass and a little restraint

The Tucker Cal has a gentle, unshowy charm. Its wooden case and aged tan fabric lining give the black control panel and clear glass a quiet setting. The details make you stay: the pale sectors around the controls, the dark handpiece below and the way the glass sits in the lid. There is a lovely balance between the warmth of the case and the purposefulness of the machinery.

A face worth studying

Two black controls sit against the dark panel, with Off and Strong lettering around them. Above, the three pictured glass forms are a comb, a curved mushroom and an angled probe-like piece. Together with the wand, they create a small arrangement full of interest. A few simple shapes can carry a surprising amount of atmosphere.

A machine to get to know

This restored Tucker Cal is graded Used – good. What appeals to me is how much character lives inside a modest case: the wood, the cloth, the lettering and the glass each contribute something. It is a lovely piece to study slowly, following the original arrangement and the thought behind it. Enquire for a closer look at this particular set and its pictured components.
