A closer look.
An apparatus with its own atmosphere
The Yesteryear feels like a whole little world packed into a suitcase. The brown case, patterned lining, brass-coloured catches and two cream controls give it a warmth that is difficult to reproduce. Open it and you immediately want to follow the arrangement: the glass, the handpiece, the controls and the grille above them. Every part adds to the impression of an instrument made to be kept.
The internal cooling fan gives this set a particularly purposeful character. Its upper ventilation grille is a lovely piece of the design, bringing a workshop-like practicality to an otherwise richly presented case. It is one of those details that makes a machine stay in the mind.
The booklet beside the machine
The accompanying Violet Ray of Yesteryear booklet is the 1919 edition, carrying the wording Printed in 1919. Having the booklet beside the apparatus adds another dimension to the enjoyment: the printed explanations and period presentation sit alongside the glass and machinery they describe. I always find that surviving papers make an old instrument feel closer to the people who once opened its case.
My restoration notes
My notes describe cleaning and testing the internal coil, polishing the metal fittings and contacts, reconditioning leads and insulation, and testing the glass electrodes. The internal cooling fan is functional. The set is graded Used – like new, with the fitted suitcase and its contents making a striking presentation.
What accompanies the Yesteryear
The machine is offered with the pictured glass selection, original booklet, cooling-fan system, tested power cable and an included 240 V-to-110 V step-down transformer. The graphite rod is excluded from the main set; a graphite rod and a pure-silver electrode are separate options to discuss if you would like them. There is plenty to enjoy in the main arrangement itself: the fan, the glass, the papers and that wonderfully evocative suitcase, all waiting for a slower look.
Condition: Used – like new.
