A closer look.
A case with a character all of its own
There are violet rays you recognise by the name on the panel, and there are examples you remember by the whole scene when the lid opens. This Holo-Electron belongs in that second group. Deep red lining surrounds the glass, a cream control face brings the eye down to the generator, and the original booklet ties the whole presentation together. It has warmth, presence and that slightly otherworldly quality that makes these machines so difficult to walk past.
The outside details matter just as much. This is the example with the stitched handle and bright silver-coloured catches, a lovely contrast against the dark case. Those details are part of its individual identity, alongside the red interior, the particular control unit and the glass shown in its own photographs. We describe the piece itself, rather than treating a maker’s name as the whole story.
The control panel and the handpiece
The cream faceplate carries the Holo-Electron Paris name, a large central black control and its surrounding numbered scale. Small metal controls and fittings sit beside it. There is an appealing economy to the arrangement: a proper instrument face, with enough detail to hold your attention without losing that wonderfully direct relationship between hand, dial and apparatus.
Beside the control unit sits the substantial original wand described in the listing, its dark grip meeting a smooth metal barrel. The cable lies within the lower compartment rather than disguising the machine’s construction. Together, the panel, handpiece and fitted case give this set the presence of a complete little electrical world. It is the relationship between those pieces that keeps us looking.
A lid full of shaped glass
The recorded selection includes a broad bulb or mushroom form, a precision pointed form, straight probes, a curved attachment and a large curved saddle or body form. They give the lid its own rhythm: long stems, rounded ends and sweeping curves, held in their fitted positions. Each outline adds something different to the appearance of the set.
Our original equipment description records the pictured glass as a complete original selection, with the pieces seating and energising evenly at the time of that listing. We keep that wording with this particular machine. The actual supplied selection, connection details and present configuration are discussed individually when you enquire; we do not assign an unrecorded gas fill or universal fitting to a photograph.
The booklet stayed with the story
The illustrated Rayons Violets booklet is a particularly absorbing companion. Its Holo-Electron name and striking cover artwork speak the same visual language as the machine and the printed motif within the lid. In one photograph it rests across the generator; the second lets you see the control face underneath. Both are original photographs of this example.
A surviving booklet gives a collector another way into an object: its diagrams, presentation and the way the apparatus was introduced to its first readers. Here it belongs alongside the glass and the case, rather than becoming a generic promise of paperwork. The recorded inclusions identify the original Holo-Electron booklet/manual shown in the gallery.
Restoration, condition and the next chapter
The original listing identifies this example as fully restored and records stable violet output across its electrodes. Its stated condition was Used – like new, while the equipment description also notes very good condition for its age, intact hinges and clasps, the original wand and the fitted red-lined case. Those are the retained details of this individual set, rather than a new inspection claim.
There is a great deal to love here before anyone starts explaining it away: the colour, the proportions, the handpiece and that small library of glass. If this is the Holo-Electron that catches your eye, get in touch. We can discuss its current condition, the exact inclusions, availability and any closer views you would like. The next conversation starts with the actual machine.
