A black case opens onto a small theatre of red and glass.
The red interior is the first thing that holds my attention in this earlier Holo-Electron record. Against the black fitted case it gives the apparatus a real sense of occasion. The original control unit, substantial handpiece and specialist glass collection become a composed scene, with the enclosure framing the equipment as carefully as a display cabinet might frame treasured objects.
There is an affection in looking closely at a complete arrangement like this. The case was designed around the apparatus, rather than supplied as an afterthought. Its compartments tell you that these pieces belonged together, and that the act of opening, selecting and putting away was part of the experience of owning such an instrument.
The colour of anticipation
Red changes how the glass is seen. In the original photographs, the contrast draws the eye around the electrode collection and back towards the handpiece and panel. That visual relationship is worth preserving in its own right. The apparatus carries industrial design, specialist craft and the period ambition of electrical experimentation within the same enclosed space.
It would be easy to describe the case as packaging and move on, but that misses much of its appeal. The interior gives each component a setting, and the setting gives the assembled object its personality. For a collector, the arrangement of the surviving pieces can be as memorable as the name displayed on the equipment.
Keeping the earlier portrait
The original listing described a restored working apparatus in very good overall condition. Those are the recorded terms of that earlier description, preserved alongside the photographs rather than turned into a new assessment today. The pictures remain valuable for studying the individual glass shapes, the condition of the case and the relationship between the main surviving components.
This is the kind of machine I want the ARC hive to remember with some warmth. Its appeal lies in the whole ensemble: the dark exterior, the red opening, the purpose of the controls and the delicate collection inside. The separate relisted entry continues its catalogue trail, while this page retains the earlier image of a particularly striking French set.
